While it is one of the current coalition's flagship projects, updates on its progress have been rather sparse.

In a parliamentary question, MPs Claude Wiseler and Laurent Mosar from the Christian Social People's Party (CSV) asked Minister of Health Paulette Lenert about the progress of the project to legalise recreational cannabis in Luxembourg. Lenert responded with an "adequate" assessment of the work carried out so far.

The Minister assured that the government was currently working on a regulatory framework that would protect people who come into contact with cannabis while keeping them away from the black market by making it "less appealing".

However, Lenert, who was very vague in her statements, confirmed that work on the cannabis legalisation project is still ongoing. She did say that "intensive" exchanges between the different ministries had taken place and that the project had been "completed" and "optimised".

Having already admitted that the project had been delayed by the coronavirus pandemic, the Minister refrained from indicating a date or deadline for the presentation of a concrete plan.

However, if the government intends to fulfil its commitments set out in the coalition agreement signed in 2018, it will have to work twice as hard. In fact, the coalition has already exhausted two years of its mandate and the 2023 elections are drawing closer every day.
